COLOR PROCESS
The yellow color of yellow sapphire is created when colorless sapphire is exposed to irradiation and heat. Paler yellows are formed using electrons, while the darker yellow hues known as Super yellow and Sri-Lanka yellow are formed from exposure to neutrons. The color process to create the various shades of yellow sapphire can take minutes or years, as the high energy process of coloring sapphire requires the stone to be stored before the energy can be safely released. The colorless sapphire used in the process is generally mined in Sri Lanka, Brazil, or Thailand. The gemstones are typically cut before colored.
